  • Looking down through 5 rooms inside the main Great House at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. The light on the wall in the last room was actually reflected off the wall for the room before it. Chacoans were skilled masons, and Chaco Canyon was the ceremonial, administrative, and economic center of the San Juan Basin with a large sphere of influence.

This Great House was 4 or 5 stories high, and was built about 950 AD as living quarters for several families. This community was the social and economic center for the Pueblo Indians, and a large assortment of ceremonial rooms were in the complex.
